Very sad news indeed! As you say, he was a lovely fellow and a great advocate of Scottish Whisky.

I am lost for words. In addition to being a simply lovely human being, Martin was so generous with his time and amazing at explaining why trade policy (and especially what happens at the WTO) is so important in the real world - and not just to the trade policy nerds. He also cheerleaded us through a number of difficult moments in FTA negotiations - which I was personally very grateful for. He's had a huge impact and we won't forget his wisdom.

Very sad news about Martin - a lovely man and a fount of wisdom.

On your CBAM analysis 'The UK could end up bringing forward its 2027 deadline to sync with the EU and avoid 12 months of asymmetrical exposure.', don't forget that in 2026 the EU will charge only 2.5% of the full CBAM charge , so the asymmetry is tiny. But when the UK charge kicks in in 2027, they ought to align it with the EU's schedule - being persistently a year behind would make no sense.
