Lorand - always remember the EU is a political as well as regulatory union - worth looking at the political symbology ( as in why Labour and EU Reset is topical) of wanting the UK in PEM - the economic & trade case doesn't appear overwhelming according to CITP report 🥴- just saying.
I genuinely feel like I’ve been going insane when it comes to commentators trying to pick the worst of all options seemingly without understanding what it is, purely because it’s European but without freedom of movement. https://backseatpolicycritic.substack.com/p/uk-customs-union-bad-idea
The Common Commercial Policy of the EU CU also prevents the UK from having its own trade policy.
The SM never really supported Services which the UK excels in - plus it comes with Freedom of Movement baggage - Even Starmer would struggle to sell even greater movement of people to the UK - and I suspect the Student Mobility Scheme will create massive challenges if agreed to.
A lot of people ultimately forget that the EU really is a political and regulatory animal which it uses to control & stifle innovation - the EU AI Act almost bombs the EU into the stone age - thank ye gads we don't have to sign up to it.
Brexit was always a process - we are diverging from the EU in so many subtle ways - why would we want to be chained to a moribund behemoth?
It goes on to say (with figures):"the data suggests that advantages may be minimal and, most likely, joining PEM will not matter much when exporting to the EU"
Interestingly, the EU exporters would gain more than UK according to CITP modelling.
As with everything EU related - always ( always) look at the detail - I can fully understand the EU peddling the PEM as good for both parties - again the EU always looks after itself - nothing wrong with that - better for the UK to understand this before rushing to join.
Interesting - it's quite obvious to see that, for the UK, why the US & Rest of World is important for our employment - with the EU seeking greater sovereign autonomy it seems prudent that the UK further diversifies it's trading link's outwith of the EU. And, all this trade with the US, our biggest export market currently without an FTA - makes you wonder what benefits would accrue the UK/US with an FTA - with or without the obligatory chlorinated 🐔
Really good. I’m putting this on my class reading list.
